What is a chiropractor?
Chiropractors are primary care physicians specialized in musculoskeletal disorders treating ailments of bones, joints and muscles. Furthermore, some chiropractors (such as we) are also wellness consultants who treat a patient’s global health. To do this we use chiropractic adjustments, nutrition, soft tissue stretching and strengthening, trigger point therapy, dietary supplementation and many other modalities. We attend 4 years of undergraduate school and then receive our doctorate after another 4 to 5 years of studies. This is the educational path for becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). In order to practice as licensed doctors we must also pass several intensive State and National board certifications and meet yearly continuing education requirements.
What is an adjustment?
An Adjustment refers to the gentle and precise maneuvering of the spine or joints in your body as performed by a Chiropractor. During an adjustment you will be placed in a comfortable position and we will move the problem joint. At the time of the adjustment you may hear a “popping” sound similar to someone’s “popping” his knuckles. The sound is produced as the joint is moved and gas is released. The adjustment returns normal function to your joints which, in turn, allows the body to begin the healing process. Think of it as knocking the rust off of your joints.
Does an adjustment hurt? And Are there any side-effects to Chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is a form of physical medicine. The side-effects are similar to those experienced with physical therapy. A minority of patients will most commonly experience short-term increases in muscle soreness or stiffness. These sensations can range in intensity, depending on the severity of the problem. When first treated, the doctor of chiropractic begin by removing any micro-adhesion (scar tissue) that surrounds the joints that are not moving properly. More often, patients experience significant relief without any side-effects.
Chiropractic care is far safer than surgery or pain killers1. Many medical doctors recommend seeing a chiropractor before deciding on an extensive surgical procedure.
Is care expensive?
When compared to most visits to the doctor’s office, chiropractic care is actually less expensive. compared with long-term treatment plans that can involve medication, surgery, or intensive physical therapy, chiropractic care can often provide a less expensive, natural, healthy alternative.
If I start seeing a chiropractor, will I need to be treated all my life?
Some people say that once you go to a chiropractor you will need to go back forever. The most important point to keep in mind is that of your own personal goals. Typically, good health is a goal we all share. Unfortunately, we have become a society that wants to fix health problems instead of preventing them. We have learned to ignore our body and the way it communicates problems to us through a commonly used messenger called “pain.” Chiropractic patients learn to listen to their bodies and to take action when something is not exactly right. If this means that a chiropractic adjustment is appropriate, then they get adjusted. Most of our patients feel so much better after chiropractic care that they continue coming to see us to prevent more problems from developing. Imagine that!
Can chiropractic help with preventing pain in the future?
Prevention is the idea of taking action now to reduce the risk of future symptoms. Receiving chiropractic care on a regular basis falls into this “wellness” category. We have many patients who use adjustments to prevent future problems. When we ask them how they are feeling, many times they will say they have “NO PAIN.” However, they are typically amazed during the course of our exam, how many areas are very tender to light touch. These are what we call pre-symptom areas. If the lack of proper function exists long enough, the chances of experiencing an untimely symptom increases dramatically.
The solution is to receive adjustments on a regular basis. This preventative measure re-establishes proper movement in your spine and joints to ensure proper health. How often we adjust you depends on your specific needs and lifestyle. While we have wellness patients who receive adjustments once a month, we also have other patients who love to experience adjustments even more frequently. We adjust them even when they are feeling “NO PAIN.”
Prevention makes much more sense than symptom chasing.

Is chiropractic care safe for my children and how can it help them?
Many children, including infants and toddlers, can benefit greatly from chiropractic care. The nervous system is the master controller of our body. If its communication channels become fuzzy, distorted or damaged, then we experience all sorts of communication errors. This ineffective communication may play out as colic or irritability, an inability to suckle and breastfeed, poor sleep, developmental delays, digestion issues, asthma, behavioral problems, low energy, inability to concentrate, headaches, etc.— the list is endless. In fact, regardless of what the symptom may be, all roads to ‘optimal health’ lead back to the body’s ability to self-regulate so it will function at a peak level.
Let’s take Infantile Colic as an example. We have personally seen infants resolved of colic after receiving adjustments. Some studies reveal an 80-90% reduction in colic with 1 treatment. The explanation is that interruption of vital nervous system information coming to and from the spine can have a negative effect on the function of the end organ. In the case of Infantile Colic, the end organ is the intestines. The disruption of proper nervous system informational flow causes symptoms of cramping and pain for the baby. Reducing this nerve information interference with the adjustment provides the observed benefit.
A pediatric chiropractic adjustment is not at all the same as with adults. It is very gentle and low-force. The chiropractic care is always modified to accommodate a child’s size, weight, and unique spinal condition. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.
While chiropractic may be able to help with a number of health issues, our focus is not treating or curing ailments; our focus is ensuring the nervous system has every opportunity to work efficiently and effectively.
Can a neck adjustment cause a stroke?
Quick fact: Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke.
Stroke kills almost 130,000 Americans each year—that’s 1 out of every 20 deaths.1
Stroke has occurred in people with high risk factors following actions as trivial as coughing, rotating the head to back a car out of a driveway, and other “normal” activities like yoga and visits to the hairdresser.2
A number of our patients inform us that they have been told to never let a chiropractor adjust their necks due to the risk of stroke. Studies have reported that the incidence of stroke due to a chiropractic treatment is still only 1 stroke out of 3 million manipulations3 (0.000033%). This is significantly less than the estimates of 1 stroke per 500,000 – 1 million cervical manipulations and prescribed medications calculated from surveys of neurologists4. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than getting a stroke from chiropractic adjustments. Taking a drug for a headache is far more dangerous!
Next time someone tells you bad stories about chiropractic, ask them if they have ever been adjusted or even personally viewed someone being adjusted. After they answer NO, you will know that their opinion is not based on experience or fact. The bottom line is that chiropractic adjustments are among the safest procedures performed in medicine today.

Can I still be treated if I have…
- Arthritis in my joints: Arthritis is the term used for inflammation in the joints due to wear and tear. These wear and tear occur because of mechanical dysfunction of the joint while in motion. In order to stop arthritis from getting worse, proper alignment and rehabilitation of the joint by the chiropractor is the solution.
- Joint fusion or joint replacements: There is low risk from chiropractic adjustment when you have had a joint replacement or joint fusion. However, it is important to tell your chiropractor of such things. Contrary to this misconception, chiropractic care is especially helpful after joint fusion or replacement, because the surrounding bones are going to be compensating and this may lead to improper joint function as well as more pain down the road.
- A chronic illness: When suffering from chronic illnesses such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and Lupus, etc., chiropractic care helps reduce the intensity and length of episodes. Some patients live almost symptom-free lives while under chiropractic care.
- When I am feeling sick: You should absolutely seek treatment as soon as you start feeling sick! While medication may mask the symptoms so you don’t feel as bad, it also decreases the ability of your immune system to fight off the bacteria or virus. Chiropractic care is the total opposite! An adjustment will ensure that your nervous system, and thus your immune system, is working at its finest so that your body recovers much more quickly.
Can you help me with my type 2 diabetes?
Has anyone ever told you that type 2 diabetes is reversible?! It is important for you to know that you do not need to live with this disease the rest of your life. Many Americans’ lifestyles are the reason they develop type 2 diabetes—less physical activity, consuming unhealthy calories, larger portions than necessary, and being overweight. All these can lead the body to become insulin resistant. Then the sugar you eat cannot be used by your cells, which causes it to stay in the bloodstream. Constant high blood sugar will cause the symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes.
